Protesting teachers in West Bengal demand job reinstatement after Supreme Court order, government promises list by April 21.
Protesting teachers who lost their appointments after the Supreme Court order met West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu on Friday (April 11, 2025) at the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) Bhawan. After the meeting, the teachers said that government officials have assured that they will publish a list of tainted and untainted candidates by April 21.
Thousands of teachers who lost their jobs took out a march demanding that the authorities release the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) of their exams to segregate the valid job holders from the invalid ones.
Coming out of the meeting with Mr. Basu, protesting teacher Mehboob Mondal said that they were not completely relieved till the time they got a legal order from the Supreme Court to reinstate their jobs. They have said they will continue their protests till their jobs are reinstated.
“Government has said they will publish lists of tainted and untainted candidates by April 21 after legal consultation. They said they do not have the OMR sheets, but whatever OMR sheets the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has unearthed during their investigation can be used to publish the lists,” Mr. Mehboob added.
Post the meeting, Mr. Basu said that the government does not have any issue in publishing the lists. “We will ask the SSC to publish the lists according to the CBI’s findings,” the Minister said.
Before the meeting, the teachers and education department officials negotiated for over an hour to decide on the number of representatives who can meet Mr. Basu. Authorities wanted four people to attend the meeting, but the teachers insisted that four people representing nearly 26,000 people who lost their jobs was unacceptable for them. Finally, 12 people were allowed to attend the meeting with the Education Minister.
There was a large police contingent and Rapid Action Force (RAF) posted on site to stop the thousands of protestors from reaching SSC Bhawan.
