Proposed Kam Lake campground passes first reading by Yellowknife City Council

Yellowknife's Arctic Farmer is one step closer to developing a 22-site campground near the end of Braden Boulevard, along the southern end of Grace Lake.
The landscaping company is proposing an amendment to a zoning law that would allow the operation of a commercial campground on the 10 hectare, city-owned lot.
That proposal passed a first reading on March 11 by Yellowknife city council's governance and priorities committee.
The city currently leases the lot to Arctic Farmer for sod farming. The proposed campground would take up a quarter of the lot, roughly 2.5 hectares, according to city documents.
Ideas to turn the spot into a recreation area are nothing new, with some considering the area Yellowknife's unofficial second golf course.
Arctic Farmer co-owner Darwin Rudkevitch spoke to Edge North in 2015 about the company's plans to construct a 9-hole course in a five-year period, complete with grass fairways and a possible RV park nearby.
City documents indicate the company was operating an unauthorized campground on the site during summer 2023 which it was later forced to close.
Council will hold a public hearing regarding the campground at 7 p.m. on March 25.
