The young Mumbai batsman was handed a backdated ban of 8 months after the Indian Premier League in 2019 after failing a doping test in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier that year. The BCCI had said that Shaw had "inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups. The India opener missed home series against Bangladesh and South Africa and was not part of India's Test set-up for more than a year. Shaw escaped a lengthy ban as the BCCI was satisfied with Prithvi's explanation that he had taken Terbutaline inadvertently to treat a Respiratory Tract Infection and not as a performance-enhancing drug.
