Power struggle within AIADMK widens, Panneerselvam seeks postponement of council meet

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Palaniswami and senior AIADMK leader Panneerselvam are engaged in a power struggle after the party decided to appoint a single leader to a top post previously held by Jayalalithaa.
With just two days to go for All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (AIADMK) general council meeting, the leadership stalemate in Tamil Nadu continues. Party coordinator O Panneerselvam, who has almost been sidelined by the party leadership, has written to former Chief Minister E Palaniswami seeking postponement of the council meeting.
On June 14, during a meeting convened to discuss the agenda over resolutions to be passed in the meeting, senior leader Madhavaram Moorthy sought unitary leadership for AIADMK, shocking OPS.
Panneerselvam was more upset after former minister D Jayakumar stated that the majority leaders within the party were now seeking a single leader.
“This was something that was to be discussed within closed doors,” said OPS, who had objected to elections to the post of general secretary. The post was previously held by the late Jayalalitha.
Senior leaders Sengoottaiyan, KP Munusamy, SP Velumani, Vijayabhaskar, Dindigul Srinivasan have already rallied behind EPS.
On Monday, Deputy Coordinator Vaithilngam read out a letter written by OPS to EPS which explained the current situation and sought postponement of the general council meeting.
When asked if a resolution can be passed bringing back unitary leadership for AIADMK without OPS’ signature, JCD Prabhakar said that it can’t be done.
