Communities affected include Walden, Whitefish, Fairbanks, Narin Centre, McKerrow, Espanola, Webbwod, Massy, Spanish and Cutler along with most of Manitoulin Island.
"Our crews are working safely and as quickly as possible to restore power as severe thunderstorms pass through," Hydro One said on social media at 11:19 a.m. Aug. 18.
Power was restored to most customers in Chelmsford, Dowling Onaping Falls, Windy Lake and Cartier by 2:30 p.m.
The utility company initially said online it hoped to restore power to most customers in the area by 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, but that was pushed back to 8 p.m. for thousands.
As of 3:30 p.m., the power provider reports of about 15,737 customers without power following storms that brought high winds and lightning strikes to the region.
