Pope Francis has died after struggles with bilateral pneumonia. Since the announcement of his condition, respiratory doctors have spoken out about the Catholic leader's diagnosis.
"The polymicrobial infection, which arose on a picture of bronchiectasis and asmatiform bronchitis, and which required the use of antibiotic cortisone therapy, makes the therapeutic treatment more complex," the Vatican said in a statement at the time. "I heard there was a respiratory failure event this morning … where he was unable to catch his breath. We don't know what caused that."
