West Bengal police on Sunday nabbed three scammers who allegedly extorted Rs 30 lakhs from two job seekers.
The accused, 49-year-old Pradeep Das, 56-year-old Ashok Bhattacharya and 62-year-old Gopal Samant had promised jobs to the two victims, Debanjan Adhikari and Sukumar Mandal, in the West Bengal government’s Irrigation and Fisheries Department.
The residents of Tamluk in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal, Adhikari and Mandal were duped of 12 lakh and 18 lakh respectively. The duo later filed a complaint with local police, who arrested the trio. According to sources, it is suspected that the accused had cheated others too. They were remanded to police custody.
“The scammers came ahead with the proposition and asked us to accompany them to Kolkata,” said Debanjan Adhikari. He added, “Bhattacharya introduced us with Subrata Das. Firstly, they said we will be employed in Eastern Railways. Later they said we would be moved to the Irrigation Department.”
Recalling the conversation with Das, Adhikari said, “He asked us to pay a sum of 12 lakhs, pushing us to pay 1 lakh immediately against an agreement.”
Adhikari revealed that the entire process was incumbent for over a year, following which the alleged fraudsters threatened him.
One of the victims, Adhikari, stated that a person named Shouvik Sanyal, who is a resident of Kolkata, was allegedly the main accused in this job fraud scam. “He introduced himself as a state government employee to the job seekers,” Adhikari said.
