Calgary police investigating a fatal shooting in the southwest community of Evergreen on Thursday are hoping the public might know something about a man spotted in security camera footage near the scene.
At approximately 8:20 a.m., police were called to the 100 block of Everwoods Court S.W. for reports of two people in a parked vehicle suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
The woman, whom police identified as Nakita Baron, 31, was declared dead at the scene, while the man was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.
In a statement Thursday evening, Calgary police said they believe an unknown man approached the parked vehicle and fired shots into it before taking off in an SUV.
Police said the SUV was described as a black Mitsubishi Eclipse, made between 2017 and 2020.
Later Thursday, police sent out a subsequent statement asking for the public's assistance identifying a person they say is a suspect after they obtained security camera images from the area.
Police described the man as 25 to 35 years old, about five feet eight inches to six feet tall and around 180 pounds with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a dark blue hard hat with a black hood, a bright orange T-shirt with a yellow reflective vest and dark-coloured pants.
"We are asking any witnesses who have not come forward with information to contact police," said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson.
"Although this does not appear to be a random incident, it remains unknown which of the victims, or if both, were targeted in this brazen act of violence, which occurred at a time when families were active in the neighbourhood."
Police said an autopsy for Baron will take place Friday morning.
Neighbour Joachim Ge said he moved to the area with his family at the end of May, and up until now has "always felt safe."
"I'm worried, I'm really concerned, because I just moved here. I've never been this close to violence since I moved to Canada," he said.
Neighbour Natalia Gomez, who lives with her family nearby, said this kind of violence is unusual for this area.
"I don't know what goes on behind the scenes in most places, but I grew up here, I grew up with the kids playing in this neighbourhood," she said. "This is the first time I've seen something crazy like this happen, especially on this street."
