Police investigate 'suspicious' fire behind GO train delays out of Hamilton's West Harbour station

GO train customers heading to Niagara could be delayed up to 30 minutes, due to a fire investigation near the tracks at West Harbour station in Hamilton.
Metrolinx spokesperson Matt Llewellyn said an expected "significant ripple effect throughout the network" has been averted.
"The only delay that we're anticipating heading into the afternoon is Niagara Falls customers heading back towards Niagara," Llewellyn told CBC Hamilton.
"It is looking like that train is going to be delayed because of that fire that happened and the damaged equipment there.
"So, that train probably will be delayed anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes or so. But other than that, things are looking pretty good, especially given what happened this morning," Llewellyn added.
Llewellyn said that around 3 a.m. on Friday, emergency crews received reports of a fire at a signal bungalow just east of West Harbour station.
Llewellyn said the signal bungalow is a critical piece of infrastructure that controls the signals and the switches for the tracks in that area.
"At this point, police are investigating. We're considering the fire to be suspicious in nature," Llewellyn said.
As a result of the fire, he said crews had to operate the switches by hand, which resulted in delays of up to 40 minutes for a number of trains that were in Metrolinx's layover facility at Stony Creek.
"It created some pretty significant delays for Hamilton customers," Llewellyn said.
Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent and Sarnia can all expect between 20 and 40 millimetres of rainfall this weekend.
