SIT files 1,800-page chargesheet in Beed court for murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, implicating Walmik Karad and others.
Months after the murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, the special investigation team (SIT) filed 1,800 pages of chargesheet on Thursday (February 27, 2025) in Beed’s district court in Maharashtra.
A chargesheet has been filed in three cases: the extortion case, in which Walmik Karad, a closed aid of Food Minister Dhananjay Munde, was booked; an assault case registered against a windmill company staffer on December 6, 2024; and the case of Deshmukh’s killing.
Deshmukh, a sarpanch of Massajog village in Maharashtra’s Beed district, was murdered on December 9, 2024. His murder was allegedly connected to the extortion case, where the accused persons attempted to extort money from a windmill company in the district. A total of eight persons, including Walmik Karad, were arrested in all these cases. However, the ninth accused Krishna Andhale is still absconding. According to police officials, the supplementary chargesheet will be filed against him after his arrest.
The other accused against whom the chargesheet is filed are - Sudarshan Ghule, Vishnu Chate, Jayram Chate, Mahesh Kedar, Sudhir Sangle, Prateek Ghule, Siddharth Sonawane, and Mr. Karad.
The Deshmukh murder also brought Mr. Munde under fire, with both Opposition leaders and members of the ruling alliance demanding his resignation. The chargesheet has also raised eyebrows as it was filed within a day after the lawyer Ujjwal Nikam was appointed as the public prosecutor.
Beed MP and NCP(SP) leader Bajrang Sonawane questioned the time of filing the chargesheet. “I am shocked to see that police filed chargesheet in hurry, why police are in such rush,” he said.
