Madras High Court dismissed a plea to ban religious attire in schools.
A PIL petition to prevent students from wearing clothing displaying their respective religions while attending classrooms was dismissed as withdrawn by the Madras High Court on Monday.
A division bench of Justices M Duraiswamy and TV Thamilselvi dismissed K Gopinath's plea on behalf of Hindu Munnetra Kazhagam President K Gopinath.
When the bench informed the petitioner's counsel that similar pleas were pending before the Supreme Court, the bench appeared to be referring to an appeal against a Karnataka High Court judgement upholding the prohibition on the hijab inside schools.
"Chapter 1V, Rule 14(iii) of code for uniforms in primary and nursery schools stipulated that the students should wear the uniforms prescribed by the respective school managements," the petition claimed, as per PTI.
"However, of late, attempts were deliberately being made to violate this stipulation," it added.
