A 'Pink Chowki' on Delhi's GB Road was inaugurated on Sunday to help distressed sex workers.
An all-women's-managed ‘Pink Chowki’ has been established in Delhi’s GB Road to assist sex workers who inhabit parts of the area. The special police unit was inaugurated at Sharaddhanand Marg, Kamla Market, on Sunday.
The area, located in the heart of Delhi, reportedly houses 30 brothels and over 2,000 sex workers.
The establishment is divided into two parts, where one will tend to the grievances and needs of vulnerable victims, and the other will be used as a vocational and educational centre.
"The Pink Chowki is an attempt to provide a safe complaint redressal mechanism for these women and girls without having to visit the police station," officials said.
Computer training and nursing sessions facilitated by the AIIMS hospitals will also be provided as job skills for women and girls currently struggling to escape the unforgiving, illegal flesh market.
"After completion of the training, these women can work as helpers at city hospitals and clinics. Besides this, they are also being engaged in small activities like making "diya and pots" so they can earn money and become independent," officials noted.
Members of Market Welfare Associations as well as senior officers of the Central District marked their presence during the inauguration ceremony.
