As many as 16 wickets fell on Day 1 of the Pink Ball Test between India and Sri Lanka as the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru proved to be a bowlers' paradise. India's pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami struck in tandem to rock Sri Lanka after the hosts were bowled out for 252 in their first inning on Saturday.
India vs Sri Lanka, Pink Ball Test Day 1: Highlights
Sri Lanka reached Stumps on Day 1 at 86/6, trailing the Rohit Sharma-led side by 166 runs with Lasith Embuldeniya and Niroshan Dickwella out in the middle. Angelo Mathews was the only Sri Lanka batter who looked confident during his stay at the crease. Mathews fell for 43 when Bumrah accounted for his wicket with a soft dismissal.
Bumrah dismissed the comeback man Kusal Mendis in his second over and then got Lahiru Thirimanne in his next. Shami, meanwhile, scalped the prized wicket of Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne on his very first ball of the match.
Shami had to rely on an excellent DRS to take his second wicket as Dhananjaya de Silva was forced to depart for 10. Charith Asalanka was the next batter to depart as Axar Patel got his wicket and Sri Lanka lost half their batting order within the first 19 overs.
Iyer lifts India: Earlier, Shreyas Iyer produced a counter-attacking 92 to help India post a competitive total of 252 in the first innings against Sri Lanka on a pitch that offered the spinners turn and variable bounce.
India's openers fell cheaply in the first session, with Mayank Agarwal run out in the second over before Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Lasith Embuldeniya (3/94). Rohit was playing in his 400th international game and his wicket ironically drew cheers from the Bengaluru crowd as it brought Virat Kohli -- former captain and the star of their Indian Premier League franchise -- to the crease.
