Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged across the metro cities on Saturday, January 22. Check out the city-wise rates here.
Petrol and diesel prices were kept unchanged for the 78th day in a row across the metro cities on Saturday, January 22, according to a price notification by state-owned fuel retailers.
On November 4 last year, the central government cut excise duty to give relief from prices that had touched an all-time high. The government cut the duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 10 a litre resulting in an equivalent reduction in retail pump rates.
Following this, many states and Union Territories cut local sales or value-added tax (VAT) to give further relief to consumers.
A litre of petrol costs Rs 95.41 in Delhi, while diesel rates stand at Rs 86.67 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol is retailed at Rs 109.98 per litre, while diesel is being sold at Rs 94.14 per litre.
Among the metro cities, fuel rates are still the highest in Mumbai. In Kolkata, petrol and diesel prices remained at Rs 104.67 and Rs 89.79 per litre respectively.
Chennai retailed a litre of petrol at Rs 101.40 and diesel at Rs 91.43 per litre.
In India, petrol and diesel prices depend on various factors like demand for fuel, valuation of INR against USD, consumption ratio of refineries and more. In addition to this, fuel rates differ from state to state due to value-added tax (VAT) and freight charges.
