Periyar University VC faces fund misappropriation case, skips conference, and appears before police for inquiry, sparking controversy.
Periyar University Vice-Chancellor R. Jagannathan skipped the Vice-Chancellors’ conference in Udhagamandalam on Friday and appeared before the Suramangalam Assistant Police Commissioner regarding a fund misappropriation case registered against him.
The Salem City Police issued a summon to Mr. Jagannathan to appear at the Suramangalam Assistant Commissioner’s office on Friday morning regarding the case registered against him for establishing the Periyar University Technology Entrepreneurship and Research (PUTER) Foundation at the university’s expense and allegedly creating a loss and also for allegedly making casteist remarks against Periyar University Employees Union (PUEU) legal advisor I. Elangovan.
The inquiry continued for more than six hours. Police sources said that more than 300 questions were asked during the inquiry with the Vice-Chancellor.
On behalf of Mr. Jagannathan, Periyar University Management Studies Department head G. Yoganandan and Mathematics Department head P. Prakash participated at the conference in Ooty.
Meanwhile, PUEU general secretary C. Sakthivel demanded that the State government take action against Yoganandan and Prakash, under Section 12(A) of the Periyar University Act, for taking part in the two-day conference.
