Peaceful demonstration near Nipigon may disrupt traffic

The Red Rock Indian Band is planning to hold a peaceful demonstration on Monday in the Nipigon area.
In a news release issued October 17th, the community said the demonstration is regarding returning ancestral remains home.
It states, "Red Rock Indian Band (RRIB) intends to facilitate a peaceful demonstration in Nipigon, Ontario, on October 21, 2024, should the search for its ancestors continue to be hindered by federal, provincial, and private representatives. The community has witnessed the remains of its ancestors being treated with indignity and impunity and without any accountability by the perpetrators."
The community, with approximately 2000 registered members, is located near the junction of Highway 11 and 17, approximately 120 km east of Thunder Bay.
Red Rock Indian Band has indicated people will gather at the band office at 9:00 am (ET) before walking to the Nipigon River Bridge, which is about 2 km away.
The Nipigon River Bridge carries Highway 11-17 traffic over the Nipigon River and is part of the Trans-Canada Highway.
The Ontario Provincial Police is aware of the demonstration happening on Highway 11/17.
OPP stated, in a news release, "Everyone has a right to peaceful assembly. At the same time, everyone also has a right to a safe environment, and free and uninhibited passage within the province of Ontario. All demonstrators have a responsibility to ensure that events remain lawful, peaceful and safe."
The release goes on to says that as part of a lawful, peaceful and safe demonstration, you can: gather to safely and lawfully assert your rights; express your thoughts, beliefs and opinions; get your messaging out in a lawful way; and have freedom of association
OPP also stated, there is no right to restrict or disrupt transportation infrastructure, and it is illegal to drive on a highway at such a slow rate of speed to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.
The OPP's Provincial Liaison Team (PLT), which ensures safety, communication, and cooperation with all parties during demonstrations,will be present to encourage open dialogue.
