The original Bengali short story Golpoboliye Tarini Khuro is one among a series of stories written by Ray based on the enigmatic character Tarini Khuro, one of his many creations and gifts to the literary world.
In the cinematic legend, Satyajit Ray's centenary year, the 75th Cannes Film Festival restored and screened one of his most loved movies, Pratidwandi, on May 19, in the Cannes Classic section. As celebrations of his centenary year continue, Jio Studios has announced a Hindi project, in association with Purpose Entertainment and Quest Films. One of Ray's iconic short stories, Golpoboliye Tarini Khuro, will be adapted into a Hindi feature film. The film will be directed by National Award-winning director, Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, while the cast will include Paresh Rawal, Adil Hussain, Revathi and Tannishtha.
The first look of the film was revealed today. The Storyteller is an attempt to introduce Satyajit Ray to a generation that has only heard of him but has rarely watched his films. Sharing his thoughts, Ananth Narayan Mahadevan said, “As part of the celebrations around the life and work of the legend Satyajit Ray, we are very happy and honoured to share our own humble homage to the master storyteller. The Storyteller, a timeless fable, explores the mindset of people who exploit and are exploited. Ray’s subtle treatment of the subject makes one smile at what is, in fact, a revenge story. An amalgamation of wit, drama, and even suspense, the film is an attempt to bring Ray to a generation that has only heard about him or been occasionally exposed to his collection.”
Golpoboliye Tarini Khuro addresses the concept of originality and plagiarism. Satyajit Ray, through this, wanted to raise the question of what is more important the story or the storyteller?
