Param Vir Chakra awardee Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) Yogendra Singh Yadav is being promoted to the rank of Honorary Captain ahead of this year’s Independence Day. On the occasion of August 15, 337 serving Army personnel have been awarded the rank of honorary captain, while 1,358 personnel have been granted the rank of Honorary Lieutenant.Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav was awarded the highest war time gallantry medal for his role during the capture of Tiger Hill in Drass during the 1999 Kargil war against Pakistan. Badly wounded, he took out enemy machine gun positions hidden inside bunkers at the icy heights, leading to their recapture by Indian troops.Four Indian army personnel were awarded the Param Vir Chakra during the Kargil war, of which two were posthumous: namely, Captain Vikram Batra and Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey.
