Shehbaz Sharif was elected by the members of the Pakistan’s National Assembly to be the new prime minister, substituting for hurt-out Imran Khan for about 15 months until the next general elections. Imran Khan was ousted in a long-drawn out and dramatic midnight vote on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. He is the first PM of Pakistan to be overthrown through a no-trust motion and the third to face the challenge.
In 2017, too, Shehbaz Sharif was at the same crossroads as now. But then the toppled prime minister was his brother Nawaz Sharif, who was convicted in a Panama Papers case. What Shehbaz Sharif was reluctant to do then, he did it now - substituting for an ousted Pakistani prime minister.
