A G1 driver is facing multiple charges after being stopped on Highway 417 in Ottawa for out-of-service licence plate Wednesday, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
A G1 driver is facing multiple charges after being stopped on Highway 417 in Ottawa for out-of-service licence plate Wednesday, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
Police say the driver was stopped on the highway after officers with the OPP were alerted by the Auto Licence Plate Recognition camera that the licence plate had been taken out of service.
That was when police found that the car was uninsured, and the driver, who held a G1 licence, was unaccompanied by a qualified driver.
The driver is facing multiple charges, including operating a car without insurance, using a licence plate not authorized for the vehicle, G1 driver operating on a prohibited highway, G1 driver operating while unaccompanied by qualified driver, and G1 driver carrying a passenger in the front seat.
Police note that, if convicted, the driver could face a minimum $5,000 fine for operating a vehicle without insurance.
The G1 licence is the beginner’s or learner’s permit in Ontario. G1 drivers have many restrictions, including the requirement to have a qualified driver with them when hitting the roads to minimize the risk of accidents.
