The 94th Academy Awards, which celebrated the biggest films of this year, made headlines for several things from Will Smith and Chris Rock’s altercation and celebrities showing support for Ukraine to Hollywood stars flaunting their style on the red carpet. The award ceremony returned to Dolby Theatre in Hollywood as the Oscars were held in person completely for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Will Smith smacked comedian Chris Rock that served as an interruption to Hollywood’s feel-good celebration but returned moments later to accept his first-ever best actor Academy Award and delivered a tearful apology. But he did not mention Rock; still visibly uncomfortable by the comedian’s joke on his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” Smith said as he began his acceptance speech after winning best actor honors. He apologized afterward to many people — including tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, Richard Williams’ daughters.
“I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people,” said Smith during his acceptance speech after winning his first-ever Oscar. “I know to do what we do you’ve got to be able to take abuse. You’ve got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you’ve got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you’ve got to smile and pretend like that’s OK.”
Jessica Chastain won the Academy Award on Sunday for best lead actress for her mascara-laden title role as the on-air preaching partner and wife of Christian televangelist Jim Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, chronicling the couple’s rise and fall.
She clinched the Oscar over a field of rival nominees consisting of Olivia Colman for “The Lost Daughter”, Penelope Cruz for “Parallel Mothers”, Nicole Kidman for “Being the Ricardos” and Kristen Stewart for “Spencer”.
The 29th edition of the Conference of Parties (COP29), held at Baku in Azerbaijan, is arguably the most important of the United Nations’ climate conferences. It was supposed to conclude on November 22, after nearly 11 days of negotiations and the whole purpose was for the world to take a collective step forward in addressing rising carbon emissions.
