Oscars 2022 and Twitter introduce new fan-voted awards, winners to be revealed during broadcast

Fans will get to vote for their favourite films by using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite during Oscars 2022. The Academy Award ceremony will take place at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on March 27.
Ahead of the 94th Academy Awards, Twitter users will get to vote for their favourite film by using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite. The online voting began this Monday, February 14, and it will be counted by March 3. Regardless of if the film was nominated for an Oscar, it will be recognised during the awards broadcast on March 27.
Besides being able to vote for your favourite film, there are other perks that Oscar 2022 and Twitter have planned for the voters. According to the report by The Hollywood Reporter, “Three Twitter users who cast their votes during the February 14 to March 3 period, will be selected along with their guests to have an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to present an Oscar award at the following ceremony in 2023.”
Meryl Johnson, VP of digital marketing at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “We’re thrilled to partner with Twitter to help build an engaged and excited digital audience leading up to this year’s ceremony. Through these activations, social media users around the world now have more opportunities to engage with the show in real time, find a community and be a part of the experience in ways they’ve never been able to before.”
This is not the first time that the Academy made efforts to encourage more mainstream moviegoers to watch the ceremony and boost ratings. The members of the Academy originally toyed with creating a most popular film category during the 91st Academy Awards in 2019. This was also an attempt to increase the popularity of the award show. However, it failed due to significant pushback from critics and Academy members.
If we look at the positive side, though the fan-favourite film voted by Twitter users won’t be a formal Oscars category, it sure will give movie buffs the opportunity to weigh in with their opinions. Also, the fan-based can give a boost to films that didn’t receive a nomination by the Academy.
Other than #OscarsFanFavorite, Twitter users will also be able to post about their favourite scene from a film using #OscarsCheerMoment. The film has to be released in 2021.
According to the same report by The Hollywood Reporter, the winning scenes will be shown at the Oscars ceremony, alongside the fans tweets. Twitter users will be able to tweet out their submissions up to 20 times a day, for both the fan-favourite film and cheer moment campaigns.
