Tourist bus overturns near Nedumangad, causing injuries and one death, prompting swift rescue operations by local authorities.

A tourist bus overturned at Irinjayam, near Nedumangad, on Friday night, resulting in severe injuries to many passengers and one death.

As per preliminary information, the tourist bus carrying people from the Kattakada area was heading for a hill destination, either Munnar or Kodaikanal, when it overturned at a steep turn at Irinjayam, barely 30 or 35 km into the journey.

As many as 49 people, including children and the elderly, were on the bus. Local people, police, and the Fire and Rescue Services began rescue operations, shifting the injured in ambulances to the Nedumangad District Hospital from where at least 25 were referred to the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, and around 10 children, aged three and up, to SAT Hospital.

One person was taken to Sree Gokulam Medical College at Venjaramoodu, and around eight remained at the Nedumangad hospital where their condition was said to be non-threatening.

Minister for Food and Civil Supplies G.R. Anil said Dasini, a 61-year-old woman, died at the Nedumangad hospital.

The Minister said doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital were providing medical attention, and none was in a critical condition. A couple of the passengers had head injuries, though none had serious fractures.

The Minister said the RDO, Nedumangad municipal chairperson, people’s representatives, and the police were on the field at Nedumangad.
