
One dead, multiple people shot in Fort Providence, N.W.T., hamlet official says

Multiple people have been shot in Fort Providence, N.W.T., according to the hamlet's senior administrative officer.
Susan Christie told CBC News that a local RCMP officer called and informed her of the shooting at about 1 a.m. on Saturday.
Christie said during the call, the RCMP officer reported that one person was dead and two others were injured during the incident.
The RCMP officer also told her they would be calling in officers from nearby detachments to assist in their response.
Dehcho MLA Sheryl Yakeleya, who lives in Fort Providence, told CBC she spoke to RCMP about the shooting this morning. She confirmed to CBC that one person is dead and two are injured, and that RCMP are still investigating.
Yekeleya said she also spoke to local leaders about the incident this morning.
Right now, she said they are asking community members to stay inside if possible and lock their doors. They have also asked businesses not to open until the incident is resolved, Yakeleya said.
She added that those measures are being jointly implemented by the Hamlet, Deh Gáh Got'îê First Nation, and the Fort Providence Métis Council.
According to social media posts the Fort Providence Northern store and Snow Shoe Pub are currently closed in response to the incident.
CBC has reached out to RCMP for information about the shooting, but has not yet received a reply.
