Construction of the Hoover Dam, on the Nevada-Arizona border, began on this day in history, July 7, 1930. It covers over 220 acres and is a National Historic Landmark.
Although the dam would take only five years to build, its construction was nearly 30 years in the making. Once preparations were made, the Hoover Dam’s construction "sprinted forward." The Hoover Dam came to symbolize what American industry and American workers could do, even in the depths of the Great Depression. Erica Lamberg is a contributing writer for Fox News Digital.
Ninety-six workers died during the construction of the dam from 1931 to 1936, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
