Speaking to India Today, Sankha Chatterjee, who is a fourth generation priest of Kalyan Mandir, stated that a special yagna was being conducted on Maha Shivaratri for peace in Ukraine following Russian invasion of the nation.
"Shiv is known as Mahamrityunjay. The crisis, whose footage we have been seen, shows how people are being affected due to shelling (in Ukraine)," said Chatterjee.
Women of the town arrived in the morning to participate in the rituals. Chatterjee stated that as it was one of the four major nights or ratris as per the Hindu Lunar calendar, it was of prime importance.
