India Today
Odisha schools will be switching to morning classes as some parts of the state are engulfed by a heatwave.
The Odisha school timings were rescheduled by the state government considering the situation of prevailing heat wave across the state, as per an official notification. The letter to the authorities further specified that the order will be applicable to all educational institutions, whether they are government run, government-aided or private. The letter added that this decision is to ‘mitigate’ the heatwave situation in Odisha during summer.
Starting April 2, 2022, students of Class 1 to Class 8 will be attending morning classes from 6:30 am to 10.30 am.
Whereas, classes for students of Class 1 to Class 8 will be held from 7:00 am to 11:30 am, as per the SME department.
A heatwave is announced when the maximum temperature hits at least 40 degrees in the plains or 37 degrees in coastal meteorological stations, and the deviation from normal is between 4.5 and 6.4 notches.
It can also be declared if some other criteria are met.
When exposed to a heatwave, the air temperature can become fatal to the human body, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Some districts in western Odisha were engulfed by a severe heatwave for the second consecutive as hot dry air from the northwest region intensified, according to a Met official.
