NYPD shooting victim Sean Bell’s married parents split mayoral endorsement

Valerie Bell, the mother of Sean Bell an unarmed black man who was shot to death by police outside a Queens nightclub in 2006, endorsed former Citigroup executive Ray McGuire for mayor Friday– just a day after her husband and Bell’s father– backed rival candidate Eric Adams.

“We need to ensure that we choose a person who has the courage to stand up for what is right – including to the NYPD – without sacrificing the safety all citizens deserve,” Valerie Bell said in a statement released by the McGuire campaign Friday morning. “That person is Ray McGuire and I’m proud to endorse him today,” she said. The two did not appear in person together for the announcement.
