Republican New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa said Tuesday that he would seek to increase funding for the New York Police Department to crack down on surging crime if he is elected.
"We’re going to refund the police," Sliwa said at the event, according to the New York Post. "Put that billion dollars back into the budget." Current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio backed a proposal to cut the NYPD’s budget of roughly $6 billion in response to citywide protests following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year. In July, the New York City Council approved a budget that shifted $1 billion in funding from the NYPD to education and social service programs.
