ZIM vs BAN, T20I series: The BCB rested Mahmudullah Riyad and appointed Nurul Hasan Sohan the skipper of the Bangladesh T20I team for the Zimbabwe T20I series.
Shakib Al Hasan reckoned that Nurul Hasan Sohan is a worthy candidate to lead Bangladesh in T20Is. Earlier, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) named Sohan as the skipper for the T20I series in Zimbabwe after giving regular skipper, Mahmudullah, rest.
Reportedly, the BCB wasn’t happy with Mahmudullah’s style of captaincy in the shortest format of the game. Shakib, who isn’t a part of the entire Zimbabwe tour, reckoned that the upcoming tour will be a challenge for Sohan, who has very limited experience of captaining a team.
“I think he has been given the captaincy because he is worthy of it. BCB thinks that it can give lot to Bangladesh in the future. That is why he was actually given the captaincy. I wish him all the best. The Zimbabwe series will be a good challenge. I hope he can overcome that challenge,” Shakib was quoted as saying.
Earlier, BCB Cricket Operations Chairman, Jalal Yunus, confirmed that Mahmudullah remains Bangladesh’s regular captain in T20Is. He also said that the decision to rest Riyad was taken after discussions with the veteran.
“We have been discussing the T20 team for several days. The issue of Riyad's captaincy was discussed. Today we called Riyad and discussed the T20 team. After discussing with him, we have decided to send a new team. We will try with some new players. That’s why we’ve chosen Sohan to lead the team,” Yunus was quoted as saying.
Mahmudullah has been captaining the T20I team since 2019 and last led them in the T20I series in the West Indies earlier this year.
The opening T20I between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 30 at the Harare Sports Club.
