West Bengal Transport Department Minister and Kolkata's Mayor, Firhad Hakim, on Tuesday inaugurated an Air Conditioned (AC) Launch named 'Sagari', the first such launch or ferry in the state.
Flagged off from Millennium Park Jetty, 'Sagari' is a 20-seater AC launch that will add a touch of comfort to the riverine transport in Kolkata.
Speaking on the occassion, Firhad Hakim expressed pleasure and said, “This launch will help people travel in a cool AC environment and enjoy the scenic Hoogly River. If the response is good, we will add more such launches. The Sagari can be run all year round and can also be used for small meetings, parties or gatherings. The launch has a pantry and a washroom and is made on a low budget”, he added.
While the ride in 'Sagari' will cost Rs 190 for an hour-long trip, the cost is Rs 3,600 per hour for the entire launch booking. The ride includes complimentary tea and biscuits. Moreover, the pantry has a microwave and fridge and when booked for parties, one can get their own catering.
Made by government-owned Shalimar Works Ltd., the launch would be operated by the West Bengal Transport Corporation. The WBTC operates government-run vessels in Hoogly and this would be the first AC passenger launch in the fleet.
The Chairman of Shalimar Works and also MD of WBTC Rajanvir Singh Kapur said, “This AC Launch would boost options for travelers who want comfort at an affordable price, adding that the WBTC has always vouched for access and affordable offerings like the Rs 39 Kolkata Heritage River Cruise in the past."
