Not been infected with Covid-19 till date? Here’s why

Are you someone who has never been infected with Covid-19 till date? The world over, the disease has taken at least six million lives in the last two years. But yet, around ourselves, we find many who have never been infected, never had symptoms of Covid19 or even tested positive on an RTPCR test. We speak of a time even before vaccines were invented as the only silver bullet to protect people from Covid-19 infection severity. Even today, vaccines do not guarantee complete protection from coronavirus.

42-year-old Sachin Singh says he has never been infected with coronavirus despite working in an office space where everyone around him was infected in one wave or the other.

“I took many flights during the pandemic and underwent several RTPCR tests. I have always tested negative. I have also never reported any symptoms of Covid-19. I live with my mother, wife and children, who have also not been infected with Covid-19,” he said.

The answer perhaps lies in a Swedish study published in the European Journal of Immunology in February 2022. A team of researchers from Gothenburg have tried to understand the role of one’s immunity in developing natural resistance to Covid19. They tracked 156 primary healthcare workers from six facilities for six months and identified IgA (immunoglobulin A) in the respiratory tracts of those who didn't catch COVID-19.

Could this mean it is an antidote in their immune systems?

The study reveals that one group that exclusively possessed IgA antibodies never succumbed to COVID-19. Participants in the other group had IgG antibodies as well as T-Cells and got the sickness. The participants who did not test positive or were unwell all had IgA antibodies. Other characteristics that seemed to provide protection against infection were being female and having a respiratory allergy.
