Ottawa is investing over $120,000 to help Tourism North Bay create an outdoor winter market in downtown North Bay.
The money is coming from the funding agency, FedNor, and organizers hope it will help revitalize the downtown, attract more visitors to the region, increase overnight stays, and showcase local arts, culture and talent.
Once fully operational, the winter market will feature products from close to 80 artisans as well as holiday-themed lighting and walking tours, film screenings in French and English, and other outdoor activities.
"The new outdoor winter market experience was designed by local partners in order to enhance the vibrancy of downtown North Bay and to support local artisans, restaurants and businesses leading up to the busy holiday season," said Tanya Bedard, the executive director of Tourism North Bay, in a news release.
"By creating a new, welcoming and festive atmosphere for all ages, visitors and residents are encouraged to explore the light activations and programming, shop the artisan market, indulge in seasonal treats and take in the festive culture under twinkling lights."
Nipissing-Timiskaming Anthony Rota said in a news release that it was great to see Tourism North Bay captialize on off-season opportunities to attract more visitors to the city.
The federal minister responsible for FedNor, Patty Hajdu, said this investment is important for highlighting the region's attributes.
"This investment will help stimulate the local economy, and strengthen the region's tourism sector. It will showcase Northern Ontario's natural beauty and unique experiences." said Hajdu in the news release.
North Bay's winter market will take place over eight weekends starting in November.
