Nobel Peace Prize for PM Modi for pandemic efforts: BSE chief’s proposal

Bombay Stock Exchange CEO Ashish Chauhan hailed the government's efforts during the pandemic and said that PM Modi should be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be considered for a Nobel Peace Prize for his government’s Covid management efforts in the country, said Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) CEO Ashish Chauhan.
Hailing the government's Covid management over the past two years, Chauhan said, “We are thankful to the government for providing us with all the facilities within the limitations they hadproviding free rations to 80 crore people over the duration of Covid (pandemic). And even now, it has been an unbelievably mammoth task that has not been recognised by us or by the world.”
Speaking at the convocation of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta on Friday, the BSE chief said the PM Modi government’s free ration scheme that benefitted almost 80 crore Indians was an "achievement far greater than the work conducted by the United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP), which was awarded the Nobel last year".
“The scheme of free rations, known as Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, has saved poor Indian citizens from anarchy and misery, which we see manifesting in other countries, including China. The number of people who have been provided with free food for over two years is more than the population of entire Europe or USA, Mexico and Canada or all South American countries,” Chauhan said.
“In comparison, the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize recipient UN World Food Programme (WFP) provided partial assistance to 11.55 crore people compared to India’s 80 crore people, at approximately 14 per cent of what India supported in 2020-2021 and 2022. Does it mean that the Nobel Peace Prize Committee will seriously look at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government’s humanitarian achievement in awarding the Nobel Peace Prize? It remains to be seen,” he added.
The BSE chief said that as Indian citizens, one should be proud of the humanitarian aid ensured by PM Modi's government to the poor in the country. “It is true social security, to the vulnerable, irrespective of their region, religion, caste, creed language and any other seeming divisions that try to pull us apart even today,” Chauhan said.
Hailing the government’s Covid vaccination management, Chauhan said that the “automated and free” vaccine drive for a population as huge as 140 crore is an achievement most Indians have taken for granted.
