No unnecessary arrest, detention over Nabanna rally: Calcutta High Court relief to BJP
India Today
The court was hearing a petition filed by the BJP after senior leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari and MP Locket Chatterjee, were arrested over the party’s ‘Nabanna Obhijaan’, or the march to the state secretariat.
The state authorities will ensure protection of the party office of the political party which had organized the rally, the Calcutta High Court said today, adding that the state must also ensure that no unnecessary arrest is made and no person is unnecessarily detained in connection with the rally.
The court was hearing a petition filed by the BJP after senior leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari and MP Locket Chatterjee, were arrested over the party’s ‘Nabanna Obhijaan’, or the march to the state secretariat.
The High Court, which heard the petition on an urgent basis, called for an incident report from the Bengal HomeSecretary by Monday.
Reading its order, the court said that there is no “need to go into the allegations and counter-allegations. Undisputedly, peace and tranquility are required to be maintained. The Advocate General has fairly stated that the leaders who are arrested will soon be released on a personal bond”.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on September 19.
Earlier in the day, Kolkata and its neighbouring areas erupted in protest when BJP workers and leaders began their ‘Nabanna Obhijaan’ to protest against the corrupt practices of the ruling Trinamool Congress in Bengal. Several BJP leaders sustained injuries, as have many police officers in the ensuing clashes.
