Sandie Bellows is being remembered as a caring, hard-working community leader and a "remarkable citizen."
The Niagara regional councillor died Sunday evening following a "brave battle with cancer," according to a statement the Niagara Parks Commission.
"Her brilliance, determination and above all kindness drew so many people to her, including me," wrote Lisa MacLeod, Ontario's Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries.
"She was my friend, my cheerleader, and my mentor," McLeod wrote, adding she's "devastated" for Bellows's family.
A profile on the Niagara region website says Bellows was an experienced public speaker and victims' rights advocate.
She was serving her first term on the regional council after representing the Grantham Ward in St. Catharines from 2014 to 2018.
It outlined her involvement in community festivals, tournaments and working with the city's minor hockey association boards.
