New roundabout at Colonel Talbot and Southdale Road opens with 1 lane
CBC
Starting Thursday, traffic will again start to flow through the intersection of Colonel Talbot and Southdale Road West but this time, vehicles will be moving in more of a roundabout way.
That's because, after months of construction to replace a traditional signalled intersection in the fast-growing area, the new roundabout is now partially open with a single lane of traffic. The roundabout is expected to open its second lane sometime in mid to late November.
For now, traffic on Colonel Talbot Road north of the intersection will only be open to local traffic. That section is expected to be fully opened when more of the intersection work wraps up later this fall.
Work on the intersection began in the spring and it's been closed for the past five days to get it ready for the conversation to a roundabout traffic flow.
Two designated pedestrian crossings with signage and overhead lights will be operating on the north and east sides of the roundabout for now.
In addition to reconfiguring the traffic pattern, work at the intersection will add upgrades to underground infrastructure.
In a news release, the city said the changes to the intersection will make it safer and improve traffic flow.
