From classic movies to original series, these are the new and notable titles coming to popular streaming services in July 2021.
Big titles this month include a new Warner Bros. film debuting in theaters and on HBO Max, "Space Jam: A New Legacy"; the return of several summer reality series; a new season of "Ted Lasso" on Apple TV+; and more. Steven Soderbergh is at the helm of this crime thriller set in 1955 and including Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro and Jon Hamm in its star-studded ensemble cast. Harrison Ford fights airplane hijackers as the gritty commander in chief in "Air Force One." Chris Pratt heads 30 years into the future to fight in a war that humanity is losing. Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson adds filmmaker to his resume with this new musical documentary film for Hulu. Just in time for summer, this coming-of-age baseball flick, set in 1962, arrives on Disney+ this month. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are two middle-aged dads trying to create a hit song to save the human race in this long-awaited sequel. Catch up with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and the staff of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in the latest season of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy." Oscar-winning producer and artist Mark Ronson explores the intersection of technology and musical innovation in this new docuseries from Apple TV+. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt team up in the latest Disney flick based on a popular theme park ride, "Jungle Cruise." Based on the novel by Nancy Mitford, "The Pursuit of Love" follows the friendship between two cousins played by Lily James and Emily Beecham. Comedian Nikki Glaser hosts the new reality dating series from HBO Max where three women navigate a dating pool of "Nice Guys" and "FBoys." All six one-hour episodes arrive on Peacock on the first of the month. All three Austin Powers films return to Netflix the same day. "It's a great ride," says Washington Post critic Stephen Hunter. This Amazon Prime Video sci-fi thriller premieres exclusively on the streaming platform this month. "Summer of Soul" transports viewers to the the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and features never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, B.B. King and more history-making musicians. Both "The Sandlot" and "The Sandlot 2" are available to stream starting July 2. The Boston Globe's Ty Burr calls it "[a] sweet, dumb, unnecessary, and absurdly charming movie." The long-running medical drama has been renewed for a forthcoming eighteenth season. The 10-episode Netflix series — each episode is three minutes — was executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama. New episodes premiere on Wednesdays on Disney+. This feel-good series centered around felines and their human owners premieres July 7 on Netflix. Heartwarming stories about dogs and their caregivers are the focus of the streamer's docuseries "Dogs." Like the original teen drama series from The CW, this HBO Max original follows the lives of private school students in New York's Upper East Side. The second season of "The Dog House: UK" premieres on July 8. "Black Widow" hits theaters the same day as it arrives to Disney+ for subscribers with Premier Access. An additional fee is required to stream the film on Disney+. The second season of Aisling Bea's "This Way Up" hits Hulu on July 9. Ariana Bacle (Entertainment Weekly) says: "The overwhelming strength of 'Atypical' is how very human it is, of its affection for its messy, relatable characters." The romantic drama returns for a a 10-episode third season in July. Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario and Jake Lacy round out the cast. Johnny Oleksinski (New York Post) says of the flick: "'Part II' is every bit as good and scary as its predecessor." Jane Lynch and Sutton Foster are among the vocal talents involved in the series. "Loki" wraps up its season with a finale episode premiering July 14. Karen Gillan, Lena Headey and Angela Bassett star in "Gunpowder Milkshake." This series, based on a true story, also features performances by Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater and AnnaSophia Robb. Los Angeles Times TV critic Lorraine Ali writes: "So many themes hit home in this delightfully warm and funny series, but particularly if your parents are from somewhere else and you grew up here. Never did I ever think I'd see our story on TV." "Space Jam: A New Legacy" hits theaters July 16 and will be only be available on streaming for HBO Max subscribers with the $14.99/month ad-free plan. All five films in the vampire saga are available for streaming on Netflix beginning July 16. New episodes premiere every Friday on Amazon Prime Video. The six-episode series stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key and features performances by Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, Dove Cameron and more stars. "McCartney 3,2,1" is a six-episode series directed by Emmy Award winner Zachary Heinzerling. The six-part docuseries is directed and executive produced by award-winning filmmaker Chris Smith. Peck plays a U.S. Marshal who inherits an unruly dog as his partner. Every episode of "Behind the Attraction" arrives on Disney+ on July 21. The first season of this hit Apple TV+ series earned a 91% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Boston Globe reviewer Matthew Gilbert calls it a "sweetly cheerful comedy." Felicity Jones, Shailene Woodley and Callum Turner star in the romance, based on the novel by Jojo Moyes. Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary return to lend their voices to this animated "Ice Age" sequel. Quentin Tarantino's screenplay won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for "Django Unchained." The series has been renewed for an eleventh and final season. Jay Pharoah and Sinqua Walls also appear. The first two episodes premiere July 29 with new episodes debuting weekly on Thursdays. "It's not a bad place to visit for a bit, all bright and airy and deliciously open," says Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson. Ronson sits down with fellow hitmakers, including Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl and Questlove. The film arrives in theaters and on Disney+ for subscribers with Premier Access on July 30. The series is written for the screen and directed by British actress and screenwriter Emily Mortimer.
