Mark Emmert, who has served as president of the NCAA for 12 years, is stepping down from the role, the association announced Tuesday. Emmert will stay on as president until his replacement is found or until June 30, 2023, the NCAA said in a statement.
"Throughout my tenure I've emphasized the need to focus on the experience and priorities of student-athletes," Emmert said in a statement. "I am extremely proud of the work of the Association over the last 12 years and especially pleased with the hard work and dedication of the national office staff here in Indianapolis."
The decision for Emmert, 69, to step down was mutual between him and the NCAA Board of Governors, according to the statement. The move comes as the college sports landscape shifts and student-athletes are being granted access to lucrative economic opportunities that had previously been banned by NCAA rules.
