Nancy Pelosi's plan to visit Taiwan sends Chinese markets tumbling

Global markets fell on Tuesday as investors feared US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's expected visit to Taiwan could severely escalate tensions with China.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index (HSI) slid as much as 3.2% in the morning, but pared losses to 2.4% at close. Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index (SHCOMP) ended down 2.3%. Taiwan's Taiex closed 1.6% lower.
Japan's Nikkei 225 (N225) shed 1.4%, and Korea's Kospi (KOSPI) lost 0.5%.
