Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin boosts Tamil Nadu UPSC success with 'Naan Mudhalvan' scheme, increasing candidates clearing exam.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Wednesday congratulated the candidates from Tamil Nadu who cleared civil services examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and listed out the steps taken by the State government in this regard through ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ scheme.
Speaking in the Assembly, Mr. Udhayanidhi said the number of students who cleared UPSC civil services examination from Tamil Nadu had increased since 2021 because of the DMK government’s consistent efforts over the past four years.
He said until 2016, on an average 100 candidates from Tamil Nadu cleared the civil services examination every year. However, post 2016, this number gradually declined and in 2021 it reduced to 27. To change this situation, the DMK government introduced ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ scheme under the Special Programme Implementation Department and made civil services examination training a component of it, he said.
Under this scheme the State government provided financial assistance to select aspirants for prelims and mains preparation. As a result, in 2024, a total of 47 students from Tamil Nadu cleared the examination – a 30% increase compared to previous year. In 2025, a total of 57 candidates cleared the examination of which 50 received financial assistance under the ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ scheme. The scheme would continue to function with the same commitment to re-establish the legacy of candidates from the State succeeding in large numbers in the civil services examination, he added.

It is not often that an election in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation makes much news outside Kerala or even the capital. But the elections in 2020 were different as it culminated in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]’s Arya Rajendran becoming the youngest Mayor of the Corporation at the age of 21, an event which got attention far and wide. Now, five years later, an old tweet on that election by another young person in the running to be the Mayor of New York has gone viral.
