A damaged bamboo raft believed to be from Myanmar and a navigation buoy used in ship harbours were found washed ashore on the Vedaranyam coast on Monday.
The bamboo raft, constructed with bamboo poles and believed to be used for fishing, was discovered near the coastal area of Maniyanthivu in Vedaranyam. The upper section of the boat was severely damaged while its base remained intact as it drifted to the shore.
In the same vicinity, a bright red navigation buoy, usually used in harbours to indicate water depth for vessels, was found washed ashore. The buoy appeared to be non-functional and showed signs of prolonged exposure to the sea, sources said.
Upon receiving information, officials from the Vedaranyam Marine Police Station arrived at the site and initiated a thorough investigation.
Officials suspect that the bamboo boat might have been carried by strong sea currents while the buoy is likely to have drifted from a maritime facility.
