The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link project is expected to boost the economy at both ends of the bridge and will ease travel for people considerably.
The Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) are confident that the work on the much talked about Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Project (MTHL) will be completed by mid-2023.
The 22-kilometre long sea bridge project connects Mumbai with its satellite town of Navi Mumbai. The sea bridge project is expected to boost the economy at both ends of the bridge and will ease travel for people considerably.
On April 11, the MMRDA organised site visits and said that the work on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Project, which is in progress in three phases - Packages 1, 2 and 3, is about 76 per cent complete and that the MMRDA is planning to complete the work by the end of September 2023.
Aditya Thackeray, Minister, Tourism, Environment and Climate Change, expressed hope that if all goes well, Mumbai will soon be riding on the bridge by next year. "It's an engineering marvel and we plan to make a museum as well to make one and all see what has gone into the making of the bridge. It's going to be a beautiful experience with a view of the ocean. The work was delayed due to the Covid pandemic but now it has picked up speed."
The MMRDA commissioner SVR Srinivas, in an exclusive interview with India Today TV, said that the infrastructure project has faced many challenges over the years and overcoming them all would soon be an infrastructure project of its kind. "We are working with engineers to see how we can ensure that the travellers are able to see the beauty on either side of the bridge. Work is on to ensure the same. And at the southern end, we are proposing a museum which in itself will be an attraction for all. We are trying our best to offer this project at the earliest," he said.
MMRDA said that out of six interchanges of the MTHL project at Sewri, work on C-2 and ramp has been completed up to the subbase and also the work on four-km of spread up to the deck slab of the original bridge from the access road has been completed as well.
"Since the work on the four-km spread of C-2 access road and of the original bridge is completed, the contractor will be able to transport construction materials from the access road to the original bridge, which will speed up the construction of the project. Earlier, temporary bridges and elevators were used for bridge work and inspection. This is a milestone as it is currently possible to drive on the main bridge of the MTHL on the roads of Mumbai," said the MMRDA.
