The accused booked a courier service to ship a parcel fitted with a home-made bomb and stated its value to be Rs 9.81 lakhs. He then bought insurance for it.
A 17-year-old in Mumbai wanted to get rich overnight. So, he went on Youtube and made a bomb with fire crackers, complete with an electronic circuit, batteries, and timed it with a mobile phone alarm before putting it in a courier. His idea: to claim insurance against the damages to his parcel caused by the explosion.
However, his seemingly fool-proof plan was blown when the bomb went off, causing a small fire in the warehouse of the courier company in Jogeshwari, the city’s western suburb. Officials were quick to report the incident and soon the place was teeming with cops.
As they searched the place, police officers found the DIY bomb inside the parcel that exploded. This led them to the details of the sender and soon, they were at the boy’s residence in Santacruz - another western suburb of the metropolis, from where he was arrested.

When questioned, the boy, who was preparing for his medical entrance examinations, refused to cooperate initially.
However, he later revealed that he had found out from an advertisement that if a parcel being shipped, which is insured, is damaged during transit, the sender receives the value of the goods and also 110% of the value in damages.
Armed with this information, the boy booked a courier service with the parcel containing a mobile phone, some processors, and memory cards and stated its value to be Rs 9.81 lakhs. He then bought insurance for the parcel.
