Mumbai police have issued restraining notices to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers who had applied for permission for ‘Maha Aarti’ at their local temples across the state on May 3, using loudspeakers.
The MNS had earlier announced that a ‘Maha Aarti’ will be performed at various places in Maharashtra on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya on Monday. The MNS workers had also asked for permission to recite Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers.
The police order states that a restriction has been imposed from April 10 to May 9 and that the MNS workers organising the Hanuman Chalisa programme will be held responsible if any announcement, suggestion, or any other inappropriate type of law-and-order issue arises during that period.
Meanwhile, the MNS functionaries are adamant about their position even after the police notice. Chetan Pednekar, MNS leader from Sewree, who has also received such a notice, says “I will go ahead with the event.” Pednekar had asked for permission to perform Aarti at Hanuman Mandir in Sewree.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray had given an ultimatum that loudspeakers in mosques should be removed by May 3 or they would launch a statewide agitation. He also said that Hanuman Chalisa would be played outside mosques at a higher volume in the failure to comply with his demand.
