A 68-year-old widowed woman was cheated of Rs 11 lakh by a Nigerian man who posed as UK national and promised marriage to the victim.
The south region cyber police have now arrested the accused from New Delhi. The cheat has been identified as Peter Nzegwu. The accused met the woman through Facebook.
According to the complainant, the accused sent her a friend request claiming to be a businessman and UK national.
Police have also invoked sections of the IT Act against the accused. Police said the accused used Henderson Sebestian as his profile name and put up another man's picture to cheat a woman, according to a report in Times of India.
Later, the two exchanged WhatsApp numbers and started chatting.
"As communication between them increased, the accused told the woman that he had sent gold, foreign currency and other gifts but they got stuck at the airport over non-payment of customs duty. He assured the woman that he will soon come to India and take her to UK," the report quoted a police officer as saying.
As he gained the victim's trust, the accused asked her to send her bank account details including passbook and debit card to an address in Delhi for future savings.
