The much-awaited Women’s Indian Premier League might get a month long window in March 2023, sources have suggested. It will possibly be played between 5 teams.
The much-awaited women’s IPL will be starting from March 2022, news agency PTI reported on Friday, 12 August citing BCCI sources. A tournament that has been delayed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India over logistical complications might finally see light of day, if the reports are to be believed, and it is apparently going to get a one-month window.
IPL had a women’s tournament in the earlier seasons, however, it was capped to just four matches between three teams. The official name of the tournament was Women’s T20 Challenge.
"Yes, the WIPL will start in the first week of March and we have earmarked a four-week window for the first year. The T20 World Cup in South Africa is from February 9 to 26 and immediately after that we plan to hold the WIPL," a senior BCCI official privy to development told PTI.
"As of now, we are going ahead with five teams but it could be six as there is a lot of interest among potential investors. In due course of time, the process of auctioning of teams will be announced," he added.
Both BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and honourary secretary Jay Shah in separate interviews had earlier confirmed that 2023 is the year when WIPL would start.
"I am thrilled at the kind of response we have got from the stakeholders. Multiple existing IPL teams have enquired and expressed serious interest in owning WIPL franchises," Shah had said in an interview after the Indian Premier League’s media rights auction.
