Madhya Pradesh police arrested a freelance scribe from Mumbai on Saturday for sharing a fake video of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
A freelance journalist was arrested in a Mumbai suburb for allegedly sharing an edited version of an old speech by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. In the edited version, the MP CM is made to seem like he is urging people to drink more alcohol.
The accused, identified as Iqbal Parwez (45), was arrested from Mira Road in Thane district near Mumbai on Friday.
He is being brought to Bhopal after being charged under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act, said an official.
Parwez was an Aligarh Muslim University alumnus who had previously worked as a special correspondent for a well-known national television network, though he was now freelancing and uploading his work to YouTube, said the official.
More information will be obtained once Parwez is questioned, the official added.
In the fake video, Chouhan is heard asking people to get drunk. This is being seen as an attempt to mock the BJP government's new excise policy for fiscal year 202223.
The new MP excise policy has reduced liquor prices by 20 per cent while also allowing it to be sold in supermarkets and airports in four major cities under certain conditions.
