Move over spring, winter is back: Environment Canada says brace yourself for mid-week ice storm

After record-breaking warm February temperatures, the weather will turn this week, with Environment Canada predicting an ice storm in London and the surrounding region on Wednesday and into Thursday.
The weather agency has issued a special weather statement for southwestern Ontario, from Windsor and Sarnia, west to London and Oxford, Elgin and Huron counties, as well as other parts of the province.
"It's certainly been a milder-than-normal winter across many areas in southwestern Ontario and in the last few days we've had some sunshine, the days are becoming longer a bit day-by-day, almost feeling like a bit of spring in the air, but this storm system will bring a pretty solid reminder that we've got a fair amount of winter still left to go," said Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada.
"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous," Environment Canada wrote on its website. "Extended and widespread utility outages are possible."
The prolonged freezing rain, with possible "significant ice build up in some areas," is expected to begin late Wednesday and last into Thursday.
"The storm is going to begin as snow in time for the morning rush hour on Wednesday morning and then as you get into the afternoon and early evering hours, transition into a mixture of freezing rain and ice pellets and then will become straight freezing rain," Coulson said.
"In the early morning hours of Thursday, that freezing rain will become a little bit patchy but then a second system is going to move through, and we could see another shot of steadier freezing rain Thursday afternoon into evening."
There's a chance of flurries or rain showers on Tuesday, with periods of snow and a high of 0. Environment Canada says it will issue freezing rain warning as the extent of the storm becomes clear.
