IPL2022: Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Dwayne Bravo looks to break Lasith Malinga's all-time record as the West Indies star prepares to a play a prominent role for the defending champions.
Dwayne Bravo will head into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season with an opportunity to break an all-time bowling record of Lasith Malinga. Bravo is just 3 behind Malinga's record tally of 170 wickets in the cash-rich league.
While Malinga will be working as the fast-bowling coach at Rajasthan Royals, Bravo, 38, is going strong, having bagged a Rs 4 crore contract with Chennai Super Kings. Bravo is currently second on the list with 167 wickets. Bravo already holds the record for the leading wicket-taker in all T20 cricket with 571 in 522 matches, 120 wickets more than nearest-rival Imran Tahir.
The race to overtake Malinga, one of the legends of the game who served wonderfully well for Mumbai Indians, heated up last season.
Indian spinners of the likes of Amit Mishra and Piyush Chawla had opportunities to go past Malinga's tally, but they did not get enough games in IPL 2021 to achieve the landmark. Mishra played 4 matches for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021, picking up 6 wickets to take his tally to 166 wickets. Mishra went unsold in the IPL 2022 auction.
Chawla played only one match for Mumbai Indians after being picked for Rs 2 crore and went unsold at the mega auction earlier this year. He has 157wickets.
Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh completes the top 5 with 150 wickets. Having represented KKR last year, the World Cup-winner decided to hang up his boots earlier this year.
Dwayne Bravo will have a key role to play for Chennai Super Kings as the star all-rounder is one of the senior members in the bowling unit, which will be without their costliest pick at the auction, Deepak Chahar at least for the first few weeks.
